Fear is tenacious in the current state of the world. Fear produces hate. In the news we see wars, revolutions, violence and conflict and we become afraid. We think that’s the state of the world. We become afraid. In the state of love and peace there is no hate.
I had an experience not long ago driving to work – an understanding that everything is peaceful and full of joy. I was witnessing a state of pure joy flowing through me. Everything was peaceful. Even through the traffic chaos and torrential rain. It was all perfect – the way it was. It was joyful. It was a realization that everything emanates from you. In a subjective reality, you are the creator. The way you take things is what you’ll get from them.
This is the same with hate. When we hate we’re in a state of hate. It doesn’t matter who the subject is, if there is hate it will flow out of you. It will have to go somewhere. Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of frustration, resentment and disappointment. And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you. Then you’ll have to take that garbage and you’ll dump it onto someone else. Don’t take on their garbage. Don’t take it personally.
What we hate in others is what we fear most about ourselves. The darkness in us consist of all the thoughts and emotions we repress and labeling it as socially wrong. It’s hidden material. The more we repress it the more we hold onto it.
Carl Jung described this repression as the Shadow. What we repress will come back to haunt us. Jung described the shadow as “everything that the subject refuses to acknowledge about himself and yet is always thrusting itself upon him directly or indirectly”.
What you see as negative in others is what you do yourself, in most cases. That’s the only way you recognize it as negative and hate it. You know the true meaning of the action. I had a friend who constantly complains about his mother’s tendency to rattle on and on about the most inane, interesting only to her things and this is the same thing he does on a constant basis. You recognize the trait within yourself first and then see it in others.
Living in the moment and outside of the ego will help you overcome this. Hate only exists in thoughts. Detach who you are from your thoughts. It is not who you are. You are the pure awareness witnessing existence – absorbing all experience. You just have to simply become present to it. Take a step back and witness life – offer no resistance to circumstances.
