In this post I just want to share a simple thought – there’s nothing to do and you are completely free. I was recently thinking about how our social rules and society standards have evolved to become what they are now. I found that it must have to evolve from multiple collective decisions and inventions of new methods of living over many generations. The rules that we live by: do something with yourself, become successful, gain powerful etc. have all evolved from our fear based living. Doesn’t matter who sets the rules or the standards for society – if there is fear then there will always be a limited way of life and be limited in our vision of what we can achieve.
We have to become successful because we fear we won’t have enough things to make us happy, or not being able to pay bills on time. We act on these fears because it is inherent and evolutionary base. Fears keep us alive – but in today’s standards many fears have become more harmful to our quality of life then beneficial. Fears restrict us mentally and we become blind to the fact that the only person who can stop us from doing anything is really just ourselves.
“The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. You trade in your sense for an act. You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask. There can’t be any large-scale revolution until there’s a personal revolution, on an individual level. It’s got to happen inside first.” ― Jim Morrison
So all these thoughts made me come up with a conclusion – there is nothing that you have to do. This does not mean that there is nothing that you will do. This simply means mental freedom from the frustration of competition and trying to become ‘something’. This is the ultimate freedom, where passion then takes us on our ride to success. By following our passion, we contribute positively to the world because we are happy and are also providing value to society. Whether it is music, art, charity work or entrepreneurship – if something is your passion then you will do it with more enthusiasm, more joy and with higher care. You will effortlessly produce high quality value to the world and will be enjoying it.
But first you have to know that there is nothing you are required to do. All these beliefs have simply been conditioned in you and you truly believe them. That is to be conditioned. Here’s a cool picture I want to share first before I go on.
The elephant has so much power but it has conditioned beliefs. To break free of this conditioning we must ultimately change our beliefs. Know that all these rules set by society are just ‘set rules’. If your ultimate goal is having a lot of money, and you end up not becoming a millionaire you will then suffer. You have not reached your own set standards which is really society’s standards. The free life and the beautiful toys that you were going to buy can’t happen any more. You had great expectations and now you suffer for them.
Even if you do become successful it doesn’t mean you will enjoy life. You may have a nicer way of life by your standards, but your expectations catch up and you will then have more desires, more wants, more suffering. It will never be enough. You will never experience true joy if you live this fear based kind of living.
Even if you have a millionaire dollars you still fear of losing it all and you cling on. There is still fear but it’s hidden and doesn’t arise as intensely. Its waiting to come out when the time is right.
What we must learn about fear is that it is ego based. It is locked in with our conditioned ego. We don’t ever really become conditioned, it’s our ego in which we are identified with. To become free we must separate from it and remove our identification with it; it is not who we are. Once we break free from the ego we break free from fear.
This process can take 100 years or it can 1 second, because we simply wake up to it. We already know this, we were born knowing this – but we became conditioned. So break free from society’s standards and start living a life of passion and freedom. Create your own road-show, as Terrence McKenna would put it.
