“We are not our thoughts” – What does this really mean? You’ve probably heard this line here and there thousands of times before, but never really understood it.
Here I’ll explain it to you in layman’s terms, or as “layman” as possible. Truly understanding this fact changed my life.
The idea of ‘thought’ is viewed by spiritual teachers as something that happens all by itself, it is not us who choose to have these thoughts. Therefore, we can say, our thoughts are not who we are, the problems and stress in our thoughts are just random mental neuronic stimulations becoming active, and our awareness grabbing onto it and taking it the wrong way.
When a thought enters our mind, we didn’t think it, it just came . Where does it come from? The field of thought energy – both collectively and individually.
Similar to the idea of breathing, it just naturally happens even when we are not thinking about it. However, we can still choose to breathe.
Thoughts happen to us, but we can also choose to think. It is the same idea.
“A person who thinks all the time has nothing to think about except thoughts. So he loses touch with reality, and lives in a world of illusion.” – Alan Watts
“The beginning of freedom is the realization that you are not the possessing entity – the thinker. Knowing this enables you to observe the entity. The moment you start watching the thinker, a higher level of consciousness becomes activated.” – Eckhart Tolle
Using This Knowledge
Engrain this into your being. We are not our thoughts. This straight away clears you of all fear, guilt, stress, and anything future and past related. Thought is never present, have you noticed that? It’s always musing in the past or in the future, but never truly here and now. Why not? Because that’s not its nature.
Your brain is like a radio antenna, which tunes in frequencies of thought. Your level of frequency attracts more things which are at the same level. The more negative thoughts you choose to have, the more it attracts negative thoughts. You become trapped in a loop.
That is why it’s so hard to stop arguing with the imaginary person in your head, or finding new ways to finally beat your friend in that argument you just lost. It feels good, it feeds the ego, and it accelerates in momentum. The longer you choose to stay in that thought, the harder it is to leave.
Catch Yourself Early
Whenever you catch yourself in a negative state of thought, remember that it wasn’t your thought in the first place, you’re stealing it and building on it with your own false life story – change it immediately.
Change it to what? Whatever you want! Do you want to think about expenses, bills, kids, shopping, family? Or would you rather think of wealth, abundance and peace in your life?
Let Thoughts Go
We are not the thinker of most thoughts, we just steal them from the ‘field’ and adjust it to ourselves. Let them go by simply being in the present moment, shift your awareness to the now and become mindful.
Think wisely, and only if you have to.
