And if he is not romantic personally, he is apt to spread discontent among those who are. ― HL Mencken

  • Benjamin

2 and 15 are the same quote. Also, the Dalai Lama quotation has been proven to be fictional.

    • Ars Spiritus Team

Thanks for pointing that out! There is no source for the quote, but the message stands.

    • matt

Do you even understand these quotes?

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience. – Mark Twain

      • ana

haha yes is totally true , what if i argue with smart people ? they will make me feel stupid 😀

        • Marc V

Just for a moment until you then take their collection of thoughts, pull them together and become smarter than the ones who were smarter than you before. Isnt that how evolution and progress work? Or…you can just spend your life trying to avoid stupid people as Mark Twain was talking about. Go for smart people who make you feel dumb…dumbness is just a feeling, the smarts you get by being with better educated people than you will last a lifetime. And then you find out the secret….many of them were never smarter than you in the first place. And the ones who are, lifted you up to their level. It is why I have one rule when I leave my house, do not discuss anything with people who use phrases like “Where he be at?” Those people told me their life story in one sentence and it is horrifying and possibly violent in some form or another.

          • Cate

            Marc V, you’re a prick.

          • Tom A

Your interest in others seems to only be about what good they can do for you. How sad.

          • Heather

your pompous attitude and presumptions will keep you stupid, small minded and a hazard to civilized society.

        • jason

The smartest person is the one who realizes how much they don’t know…and aces it as a challenge…written be

      • Marc V

Matt, why would you ask that question? It can only bring a person down, empower nobody and make only 1 person feel better about himself for as nano-second-You!

    • junglewizz

So what ? If it carries wisdom ? Who the f**k cares about labels ? By your very comment you’ve missed the point by a light year. Take a deep breath, or three, and try again 😉

      • Mike

But that doesn’t take away from the fact that these are things that people made up and then picked someone famous to take it higher. “Bullshit is a more dangerous enemy of truth than lies.”

        • Reggie

Errors are more dangerous than lies because lies are easier to recognise. On the other hand, hearing how someone arrived at an incorrect conclusion provides a warning for others.

    • vonni

Oh get a life Benjamin! and quote 2 in NOT the same as 15!

    • Philipp

      Not at all.

  • nice post

  • David

Do you have a source for the quote 11 (William Wallace)?

There is debate over whether he said Truly or Really (he says Really in Braveheart but this is of course just a film)

    • Ars Spiritus Team

I don’t have the source for it, but its been attributed to him. I think the message is just as chilling whether he said truly or really 😉

  • Ryan

22- The John Lennon quote. I would LOVE to see your source for that one. I’m assuming you don’t have one

  • luis

Great collection of quotes. Thank you so much and keep up the great work.

  • Nael

24 and 25 are the same. Good list though

    • Ars Spiritus Team

Thanks Nael! Yeah I keep missing the elusive doubles

  • Loved # 25….never heard that Hemingway quote before…thankyou.

    • Ars Spiritus Team

Yes I love that one – youre welcome!

      • Emmet

I love Hemingway. Do you know which of his writings that is from?

  • Taylor

    Excellent quotes.

To the assholes challenging the sources: You would be better off applying the message of the quotes to your own lives instead of wasting your time arguing the accuracy of the citations.

    • Ars Spiritus Team

      Thanks Taylor!

    • Terry

To the person calling people assholes, that you have never met and do not know anything about. Take the log out of your own eye before trying to remove the log from your brothers.

      • Kevin

To Terry who defends assholes, Taylor knows something about them; they enjoy criticizing and nit picking rather than looking for value in what is shared. Good association with being an asshole. Also, I didn’t see a plank in Taylor’s eye. I saw his annoyed reaction to people being short-sighted.

    • obas

    • pete

I’d say arguing the accuracy of the quotes IS applying the message to Your own life Taylor—which one says to believe everything you read without questiioning it for yourself? Number 12 is definitely not Plato-

  • Andrew W

Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. ― Albert Einstein

Yeah, Einstein didn’t really say that. I’m sure he would be ashamed to have people going around quoting him with something so incredibly stupid. I’m not sure about the other Einstein quote but he tends to get tagged on certain things he has never said, just cause he was known to be smart.

    • Ars Spiritus Team

The power of the quote lies more in the message rather than the source 😉

    • Really?

If you think this quote is stupid, then you my friend have a lot of learning left to do.

    • Marco

I think you read the quotes in the wrong way. We read from left to right. It’s not important who wrote the quote. It’s the message that is all that counts.

    • pete

“Everyone is born a genius, but the process of living de-geniuses them.” – R. Buckminster Fuller

  • Frank

RE: #28, read the Tao Te Ching it’ll change your life.

  • Holden

Those who are focusing only on the sources might want to take a step back to see what this thread is about… someone who put a good deal of work finding great motivational quotes. Kudos Ars, good work

  • lrbell

    Good list.
Ditto on Peter R’s comment re:the Hemingway quote.

“Aerodynamically, the bumble bee shouldn’t be able to fly, but the bumble bee doesn’t know it so it goes on flying anyway.” – Mary Kay Ash

    • Ars Spiritus Team

      haha — great quote

  • amazing 🙂

  • Maher

15 and 17 are the best. Especially 15.

  • Maher

I also admire that you put the author name in number 30 not “Tyler Durden” or ” Fight Club” as most bloggers do.

  • samuel

Great quotes! Completely related to most if not all! Thanks!
I think anyone who really understands them, knows they´re on a different level in many ways…
*I`m amazed how many people just focus on the sources… for me those thoughts meant so much, I gave a fuck about that!!!

    • Ars Spiritus Team

      Completely agree Samuel 🙂

    • Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good. Thanks

  • Mike

I like #23. It fits for people like my neice who is graduating from high school today. I’m going to send it to her.

    • Ars Spiritus Team

  • One more but for the ebook.
Would be great if each of the quotes on the ebook were also given the names who said it.

    • Ars Spiritus Team

If you’re talking about the free eBook, there should be Author names in the beginning of each section

  • jackstraww

“Great spirits have often encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.”

      Duhhh…what could that mean?

  • Rudeman

I enjoyed this quotes, some are very strong.
I also enjoyed reading the comments right after, specially the ones written by the skeptics that need the source to be right, instead of just trying to understand the message.
who gives a shit who said it??
if you spend all your time looking at the name after the “–“marks, youre gonna miss whats between them. Rodolfo Chajon

  • I Enjoy indeed! All 31 quotes… unconventional thinking to the core…!!!

Awesome Tureene! Observation is power. Judgement is weakness- Ben Franklin

Love the Abe Lincoln quote. Overall an inspiring collection.

  • Inspiring, Motivational, Nice lines. But not only the lines…
    Keep Yourself Healthy and Happy

  • Simon

So many great and inspiring quotes to contemplate and people choose to nitpick any fault they can find in the list or in each other’s comment about the list.

Is it really necessary to be so critical? Of everything? All of the time?

  • james

I love quotes. Please keep coming and thanks for the good works.

  • kevin

Nice page! I have printed it and put in my place of work.
Some of the people who have commented though should also print it and use it for their homework of life, then we all mght just live in a nicer place!

    • Ars Spiritus Team

      Thanks hank!

  • Awesome

  • Very good and thoughtful quotes

  • Thanks for share. Really nice and thoughtful collection of quotes.

  • Fantastic – some of those quotes really gave me chills! I love writing down every quote I come across and storing them away for later reading (it’s one of the quirks I have, especially when it comes to reading books, I dog-ear galore). I recently composed an article of my own on the various creativity quotes I’ve come across so far perhaps you’ll find some of your own that you like?

  • Steve

Never mind the naysayers. Keep up the good work, Brother!

    • Ars Spiritus Team

      Thanks steve !

  • AC

    Thanks! Grt quotes!

  • I enjoyed the quotes. For the nit-picker about the right or wrong author, I say(about him/her)…….”I used to get disgusted, now, I am only amused”

    • Ars Spiritus Team

  • Thanks. I really enjoy all quotes…..

  • Great quotes! #23 resonates with me. Sometimes we feel like we can do anything but lo and behold, we struggle with some things. The analogy of a fish climbing a tree sums it up perfectly. Find what you are good at and develop yourself in that field.

    • Ars Spiritus Team

Thanks Segun. I agree. Struggling is just part of the process as it reminds us of what it is that we don’t want to do.

  • Really awesome page thanks for the inspiration, always appreciated

  • Ugh. Plato. Is it time for lunch yet?

  • The quotes are inspiring indeed and somewhere I read this :
I do my thing, You do yours
I am not in this world to live up to your expectations,
You are not in this world to live up to mine,
    You are you
    I am I
and if by chance we meet each other
    It is wonderful” ……………………………….Anon

Would love to read and be inspired by more quotes from the GREATS.

simply, if you have to deal with a jerk imagine how crappy that person’s life probably is. Nobody likes jerks. no matter how much of a pain they are to you for a moment they have to go through their whole life being who they are.

    • Ars Spiritus Team

And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair. –Kahlil Gibran

This reminds me of why I Love to run, because I am free of the world and in touch with the Earth.

    • Ars Spiritus Team

Running is awesome. Thanks for that quote. It reminds of another quote by Thich Nhat Hanh “Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet.”

Ars – beautiful, encouraging and definitely thought provoking! Don’t let the small minds deter from continuing with your work =) (no matter how many times you have to listen to someone say “did x really say that?”, “x never said that” etc. <3

    • Ars Spiritus Team

Thanks for reading and the kind words Heather!

  • Appyrider66

I love my stumbleupon app just for things of this nature. Source schmorse. Some of this banter reminds me that a lot of people are just generally unhappy and want to drag the rest of us along for their drudge. May I suggest a book, Simple Abundance. Dont forget to enjoy the ride while you pick apart how it works…or ahem, how you think it works.

  • Don’t let schooling interfere with your education-Mark Twain

There you have it. The key to success.

  • Smartness stings and it hurts…, dumbness dulls your senses and you feel nothing.

For of all sad words of tongue or pen,
The saddest are these: “It might have been!”

  • Carol

    No quotes by women?

  • Joshua Pelletier

Good Quotes. Most quotes that float around the internet are in reality just platitudes, but these seem to have real meaning and truth. you can really tell alot about someone by observing if they can recognize a platitude or not.

  • PegLeg

i’m with U Carol . Men love to quote “great” men but women get forgotten…Oh no maybe
They are having their period !!

  • isn’t number 30 from Fight Club?

  • Noelle

Yep, came down to comment that there are no quotes by women. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love these quotes (even if a few are misattributed), but dang, I find it hard to believe that you have over 2 dozen quotes and not a single one was said by a woman.

  • wanda lee

As has already been pointed out, but can stand repeating, there’s not one single woman quoted here, not one. Disgraceful.

  • I have always read inspiring quotes, love quotes, sad quotes and so on but when I read the title of your post, I doubted that it could happen. How can a quote give you chills!
But well, you have done an awesome job. You introduced me to something new. Thanks 🙂

  • AL

    A lot of substance

  • Jessica

It didn’t include the quote that makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck every time I hear it:
“I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but I know that World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.” – Albert Einstein.

  • VaLois

ok but like why are these all quotes from men

  • pete

  • Amando

  • Koh Prosh Warna
  • Aditya Sharma

Photo caption have exited as old as photos have. But to try an attempt a twist in the tale is a recent phenomenon in a blog titled The Itinerant Poet by Aditya Sharma. The blog tries to re-imagine the concept of photo captions through poetry and phrases. So each photograph in the blog comes along with a poetic phrase, and it completely provokes you to look at the photo in a totally different manner. check it out! its new but surely a great read.
