Creativity is a muscle that we have to keep training. It stretches and contracts. Some days we are fully creative – coming up with ideas left right and centre. Other days there seems to be a wall – a huge brick wall guarding your mind from dipping into the pool of creativity. Why does this happen and what can you do to increase it?
Some excellent but unconventional ways include taking drugs. Like marijuana, mushrooms, LSD, tobacco and even a glass of wine. Artists, Musicians and writers sometimes resort to these methods to push their creativity to the next level. But what if drugs aren’t just your thing?
Here’s a list of 10 conventional ways which will help take your creativity to the next level.
Exercising is a great way to boost creativity. What does your mind do running on the treadmill or sitting on the bike? It starts to wander. Some of the best ideas have come up through exercise. Keep a phone or notebook nearby when you do exercise to write down those ideas.
2. Eat Great Food
When you eat great food your brain releases endorphins that makes you feel good. When you feel good you come up with great ideas. Eat things like fresh gelato, a good sandwich, roast chicken or whatever makes your mouth water. Whatever makes you excited before you eat it is the thing that will make you more creative. Try to eat well.
3. Go for a Walk
Walking is a great way to clear your mind and allow creativity to happen. Whatever stress that’s blocking your creativity walking it out is a great way to help clear your mind. When your mind becomes clustered there’s little room for creativity to fit in. Smell the scent of nature and consciously walk to de-stress yourself.
4. Examine Examples
Whatever it is you’re trying to get creative for look at other examples in your field. If you’re trying to write a novel, read novels. If you want ideas for a painting, look at other great paintings. This will kick-start your mind. It will stimulate your creative centre and expand the reference points you can access.
5. Listen to Music
Whatever it is you’re trying to find ideas for – listening to music can put you in the right mood. Listening to really great music will help you relax your mind and concentrate purely on the music. When you stop your mind – you forget about your worries. Then ideas start to flow through.
Meditation is a true and tested way to boost creativity. Even when you’re not looking for ideas, meditate so to practice your mind to clear itself and allow ideas to come in. Meditation creates an environment for insight, easing creative anxiety so you can come up with unrestricted ideas.
7. Talk to Someone
Talking to someone and asking them their opinions can kick start ideas. It can be your brother, your girlfriend, the homeless guy down the road – it doesn’t matter. As long as ideas are being passed around this is a great boost to your creativity. Like examining other examples, it helps stimulate your mind and gives you more access to reference points.
8. Come Up With Ideas Everyday
This will exercise your creative centre. Every day for 5 minutes, during breakfast/shower/putting on your tie etc. come up with ideas for whatever you want. Come up with great business ideas, great alternatives to things etc. This will stretch the elastic band of your creativity and keep it less tense.
9. Day Dream
Day dreaming helps you push the limits of reality. It allows your mind to escape the burden of “reality” and allow you to go beyond limitations. You are not confined to any restrictions which will boost your minds ability to come up with ideas.
10. Take a Nap
Sometimes you’re just too tired to come up with any ideas. Your mind isn’t working. Even thinking is hard. It’s time for a glorious nap. Give your mind a quick break and who knows – maybe you’ll dream of some great ideas.
